Interview with Jorge Nuño Mayer, Secretary General of Caritas Europa
The "Second Catholic Social Days for Europe” will take place very soon in Madrid. What are your expectations?
Jorge Nuño Mayer: I’m really looking forward to the Catholic Social Days for Europe. Europe’s social dimension is my passion; Catholic is my identity! Christian faith and values have greatly contributed to the best developments in Europe. Therefore it’s motivating to see the European bishops, through CCEE and COMECE, leading the social dimension of our faith and organising this event. I’m looking forward to the coming meetings, exchanges and discussions. And eventually to feeling even more engaged with my task of enriching the European society with Christian values. Europe is at a crossroads today. The economic crisis is not over; Trust in politics and the European project is faltering; War is again a reality in Europe; Poor people are dying everyday trying to cross our borders. We Christians cannot choose not to see. We must continue building a Europe of global solidarity. Caritas, as the genuine expression of the Church’s diakonia, will contribute to these Days and will benefit from them.
