The Catholic Social Days for Europe took place in Madrid between 18 and 21 September 2014, jointly organised by the two organisations of Europe’s Catholic Bishops, CCEE and COMECE.
CCEE gathers the Episcopal conferences of Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals, COMECE is a commission of delegates bishops from the Bishops’ conferences of the members of European Union. The mission of the former association is primarily pastoral, the latter is active in the domain of European politics, but both care profoundly about the nature of society and are committed to making the world in which we live one based on gospel values.
The Social Days are designed to assist and inspire those involved in the social ministry and out-reach of the Church to exchange best practice and deepen their own understanding of the politics, economics and social structure which enables family life to flourish, all members of society to live in peace and with decency, and the religious and spiritual dimension of the human experience to be protected and enhanced.
To achieve this ambitious purpose, CCEE and COMECE have invited distinguished speakers from different walks of Catholic life from all over Europe. We have sought also to involve and give a voice to people from a variety of areas of life, some of whom are successful, others of whom face great challenges.
We want people to talk to one another, across national borders, across the generations and across the artificial boundaries our class system may impose on us.
Our workshops will help form bonds between those of us who arrive strangers but would hope to leave Madrid friends.
We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. That intrinsic part of our identity we discover above all in our liturgies, guests gathered around the altar of the Lord.
Prayer and Liturgy will be at the heart of our Social Days.
